Marketplaces such as Amazon, eBay and Google Shopping require a unique GTIN for most products. Here is what you need and how to turn it into a scannable barcode.

Why a GTIN?

The GTIN identifies your product uniquely worldwide. Marketplaces use it to match offers – in many categories it is a mandatory field when listing.

Where do I get a real GTIN?

Official, retail-valid GTINs come from GS1 (e.g. your national GS1 office). Very cheap resold numbers from dubious sources can cause errors or listing suspensions.

From number to barcode

Once you have your GTIN, create the matching barcode for free with the EAN-13 generator (international) or the UPC generator (North America) and print it on the packaging or label.

Exceptions: GTIN exemption

For private labels or handmade products, some marketplaces offer a GTIN exemption. You then enter a brand-specific identifier instead of a GS1 GTIN.

Checklist before listing

Correct GTIN in the right field, a clean product image, a readable barcode on the packaging and – for Fulfilment by Amazon – an additional FNSKU label.
