Data Matrix vs. QR code – which 2D code fits?

Data Matrix and QR code are the two most common 2D codes. Both store a lot in little space but differ in capacity, minimum size and use case.

Structure & capacity

The QR code holds up to ~4,296 alphanumeric characters, the Data Matrix up to ~2,335. For large amounts of data or URLs, QR is usually the better choice.

Size & direct part marking

Data Matrix reaches very small minimum sizes (a few mm²) and is laser-etched directly onto parts (direct part marking). QR codes are ideal for displays, posters and packaging.

Error correction

QR offers four selectable error-correction levels (L/M/Q/H, up to 30 % recovery) – handy when embedding a logo. Data Matrix uses a fixed built-in Reed-Solomon correction.

Typical use cases

QR: marketing, menus, WiFi, payments. Data Matrix: industry, electronics, medical devices and pharma serialization under the EU FMD.

Which should I choose?

If end customers scan with a smartphone, use the QR code. For tiny parts or industrial marking, Data Matrix is the right choice. For very large data amounts, PDF417 is also worth a look.
