Scan a barcode with your phone – step by step
Almost every modern smartphone can read barcodes and QR codes directly with the camera – often without any extra app. Here is how it works on iOS and Android and what to do when scanning fails.

Open the Camera app, point it at the QR code and tap the banner that appears. iOS opens links, WiFi access or contacts directly.
Scan a QR code on Android
On most Android devices the camera or Google Lens reads QR codes automatically. Alternatively there is a scanner tile in the quick settings.
Scan product barcodes (EAN/UPC)
The standard camera does not always read classic bar codes such as EAN-13. Use a scanner app or Google Lens to look up prices or product info.
Scanning without an app
For QR codes you usually need no app – the camera is enough. Only for 1D barcodes or price comparisons is a dedicated app worthwhile.
When the scan fails
Ensure good lighting, hold the phone steady at a sensible distance, and make sure the code is undamaged with a quiet zone. Very small or glossy printed codes are harder to read.
